Cardiovascular (CV) endurance is arguably the most important component of physical fitness. People of all ages can improve the quality of their lives and reduce the risks of disease with ongoing participation in moderate physical activity and exercise. Daily exercise will also enhance one’s mental well-being and promote healthy musculoskeletal function throughout life.

What Cardiovascular Exercise?

Cardiorespiratory fitness refers to the ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen to the muscles during physical activity. Aerobic exercise helps the body work more efficiently and is especially important in preventing many chronic conditions including diseases of the CV system, diabetes, and cancer. CV exercise also increases feelings of well-being and intellectual performance. A poorly conditioned heart has to pump more often just to keep a person alive. This translates to the person not being able to perform activities of daily living (ADL) such as yard work, caring for children, or running to catch the bus.

The Benefits of Metabolic Conditioning: Metcon workouts place large demands on your body’s energy systems, they burn calories at a high rate. This can often mean altering body composition in a big way. Even after your workout is over, Metcon workouts burn calories through a process called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption or EPOC.

When it comes down to it, metabolic conditioning utilizes forms of exercise that increase the efficiency of any energy system (Ex. combining resistance and strength training in the same set) . But it’s important for every fitness goal, whether you are trying to improve your mile time, get more out of your cycling classes, get better at boxing, to building muscle and burning fat.

If you haven’t gotten enough aerobic exercise, you may use your entire aerobic capacity while walking up a flight of stairs. You'll realize this when you get to the top and feel out of breath. But if you're fit, you'll have no problem because your aerobic capacity is greater. That’s just one example of how you can benefit from cardio exercise.

Cardiovascular exercise also aids in maintaining a healthy body composition. Aerobic and anaerobic exercise, especially at higher intensities, contribute to a healthy caloric burn. The fat you store on your body is reserved for periods of prolonged or intense activity. Training the cardiovascular system through high intensity intervals increase the activity of certain hormones, such as testosterone and growth hormone, that stoke fat burning. While low-intensity, steady-state cardio burns a higher percentage of fat, high intensity exercise results in greater total calories burned, and speeds up the enzymes associated with burning fat.

Finally, having greater cardiovascular fitness means you can confidently complete activities that have a cardiovascular demand, such as climbing stairs, hiking, biking, swimming, and even strength training. Being able to move through your day without feeling winded can make a huge difference in your confidence and quality of life. A good cardiovascular base allows you to train harder during strength sessions without feeling fatigued, as well!
